**There are several strategies for teaching or learning how to multiply by 4. You need to decide which method is best for you.

  • You could memorize your basic multiplication facts of 4.
  • You could learn the first four multiples of digits up to 9.  Example, 4 x 8 is….. 8, 16, 24, 32… and your answer for 4 x 8 = 32.
  • You could break down the 4 into 2 + 2 and teach the distributive property.  Example, 4 x 8 = 8(2 + 2) = 16 + 16 = 32.

**Multiplying by 5 is easier.  Most learners can recite the multiples of 5.  Two strategies of multiplying by 5 are the following:

  • You could memorize your basic multiplication facts of 5.
  • You could learn the multiples of 5.  Example, 5 x 7 = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35….. so 5 x 7 = 35.
